Ankle Sprain Repair: Common Ankle Sprain

A common ankle sprain is a type of injury that occurs when the ligaments in the ankle are stretched or torn. It is one of the most prevalent musculoskeletal injuries, often resulting from activities such as running, jumping, or walking on uneven surfaces. Ankle sprains typically happen when the foot rolls inward, causing the outer ligaments of the ankle to stretch beyond their normal range of motion. This is known as an inversion sprain and is the most common type of ankle sprain. The ligaments most commonly affected in this type of sprain are the anterior talofibular ligament (ATFL) and the calcaneofibular ligament (CFL).

  • What is Ankle Sprain Repair: Common Ankle Sprain?
A common ankle sprain is generally classified as mild to moderate in severity, meaning the ligaments are stretched but not completely torn.

  • Causes
This often happens during activities such as walking or running on an uneven surface, stepping on an object, or participating in sports that involve quick changes in direction.

  • Symptoms
Swelling is a common response to injury and is often observed in ankle sprains. The injured ankle may become swollen due to inflammation in the affected ligaments and surrounding tissues.

  • Diagnosis
     X-rays,  (MRI), Physical Examination.

  • Treatment
Initially, it is important to rest the injured ankle and avoid activities that put excessive stress on the ligaments. Crutches or other assistive devices may be recommended to minimize weight-bearing on the affected foot. Resting allows the ligaments to heal and reduces the risk of further damage.
